Topic & Description:

From Local to Global: Concepts, Frameworks, and Analytical Tools Necessary to Develop an Effective Global Strategy

Globalization has changed the dynamics of business irrevocably. Today’s companies must operate on a much larger scale and in an environment of global competitiveness where product development, market needs, customers’ targets must take into account multiple cultures, collaborations and regional developments. Even for companies that do not intend to “go abroad,” the entry of foreign companies into their home markets makes a better understanding of global strategy a necessity if not a requisite for survival. The goal of this course is to introduce you to concepts, frameworks, and analytical tools necessary to develop an effective global strategy. There will be case studies and a presentation by student group teams on companies visited.

Three Global Network courses will be available for students this semester, including two new offerings. “Handling Disruption” taught by Chrisanthi Avgerou, a professor of information systems at LSE, aims to to provide socio-political contexts for leaders working in humanitarian crises. “International Management and Organizational Structures,” taught by Dr. Raúl Montalvo, director of EGADE Business School Guadalajara, analyzes how strategic decision-making is used in the global expansion process of businesses.

In addition, Yale SOM is again offering “Natural Capital: Risks and Opportunities in Global Resource Systems,” which was first taught in 2014. That course examines the environmental, economic, and social impact of businesses’ natural resource usage, and analyzes the risks, choices, and liabilities companies may face while using those resources.

Global Network courses use web-based technology to connect students across the world for class sessions and team-based project work. Based on a “small network online course” (SNOC) model, they provide students the opportunity to utilize the expertise of faculty at through the network and help them develop key cross-cultural collaboration skills as they work in virtual teams. In contrast to MOOCs—massive open online courses—the courses are open only to students from the top business schools in the Global Network for Advanced Management.
