Topic & Description:

From Local to Global: Concepts, Frameworks, and Analytical Tools Necessary to Develop an Effective Global Strategy

Globalization has changed the dynamics of business irrevocably. Today’s companies must operate on a much larger scale and in an environment of global competitiveness where product development, market needs, customers’ targets must take into account multiple cultures, collaborations and regional developments. Even for companies that do not intend to “go abroad,” the entry of foreign companies into their home markets makes a better understanding of global strategy a necessity if not a requisite for survival. The goal of this course is to introduce you to concepts, frameworks, and analytical tools necessary to develop an effective global strategy. There will be case studies and a presentation by student group teams on companies visited.

Teams from INSEAD, HKUST, and Yale SOM will participate in a entrepreneurship competition hosted by the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai.

Teams from three Global Network for Advanced Management schools will travel to Shanghai for the finals of the INNOVATEChina Entrepreneurship Challenge on June 15-16: INSEAD, HKUST, and Yale SOM.

The theme of the student-led competition, hosted by China Europe International Business School, is “disruptive innovation,” with a focus on new mobile products and services that will impact how Chinese citizens live their lives day to day.

Yale’s team, Glooking, is creating a dating website for Chinese business professionals.
In China, says Pingting Li, a member of the team, “there is not a well-established website designed for high profile young professionals, who have high standards of the quality of candidates but lack the time for screening in a huge database.”

The HKUST team, uHoo, is developing a household air quality sensor that will alert users through a smartphone app when air pollution is high. Dustin Onghangseng, one of the HKUST team members, says that air pollution is “a significant problem that this country has been and will be facing for some time.”

51CHi.com, the team from INSEAD, has developed an app for distributing home-cooked foods.

The three teams submitted their business proposals in May, and were among six selected to travel to Shanghai for the finals.
