University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business South Africa
Although South Africa more than twenty years ago cast aside the shackles of apartheid, having negotiated a peaceful transition from apartheid to a democratic future, as a country we unfortunately continue to grapple with the political, economic and social consequences of many decades of misguided social engineering; consequences that continue to manifest in all spheres of human endeavour. In both the public and private sectors there is a pressing need to better equip leaders and managers with the knowledge, insights and skills they require to positively resolve the many conflicts that continue to bedevil their operations; solutions that create ethical, mutually beneficial and sustainable outcomes. To be successful in an ever more complex global economy, which is increasingly bedevilled by populism and all the related demons, leaders and managers in all spheres of governance urgently need to acquire a negotiation capability, competence and confidence that is grounded in research insights.
As a generic skill, negotiation not only enhances effectiveness and efficiency in all spheres of business, but also meaningfully enhances performance at the country, community and personal levels. Consequently, this elective is structured to empower course participants with the proven negotiation knowledge, skills and the confidence they need to successfully approach negotiation from a principled, value maximizing perspective.
